Key takeaways
Hyaluronic acid and niacinamide are often mentioned in the same breath, as if they were rivals. They are not — they do different jobs and sit comfortably in the same routine. The confusion comes from both being “serums” that beginners reach for first.
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant — a molecule that holds water. Applied to skin, it draws moisture toward the surface, giving a plumper, smoother feel. It is not an exfoliant or a treatment active; its job is hydration. Multi-weight formulas (small and large molecules) hydrate at different depths.
Apply to damp skin
Because humectants pull water toward themselves, applying hyaluronic acid to slightly damp skin — then sealing with moisturiser — gives it water to hold. In very dry air without a moisturiser on top, it can paradoxically draw moisture from deeper skin.
Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is an active that supports the barrier, moderates the look of oil, and softens uneven tone over time. It is not primarily a hydrator, though it appears in hydrating formulas. Its strength is tolerance — most skin types can use it nightly.
They layer well. A common evening order is: cleanse, apply hyaluronic acid to damp skin, apply niacinamide, then moisturise. Neither requires the other, but together they cover hydration and barrier support — two of the foundations a beginner routine is built on.
