Key takeaways
A routine you can complete on a tired Tuesday is worth more than one you admire on a shelf. Most people do not need ten products — they need three, done consistently, and the patience to let them work before adding anything else.
A beginner routine has three jobs: remove what should not sit on the skin overnight, replenish moisture, and protect against ultraviolet damage during the day. Everything else is an optional refinement that comes later.
Why sunscreen comes first
Daily sun protection is the step with the strongest evidence behind it. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher for everyday use. No serum compensates for skipping it.
Resist the urge to introduce acids, retinoids, vitamin C and exfoliating toners in the first month. Layering several actives at once makes it impossible to tell what is helping and what is irritating — and a compromised barrier takes weeks to repair. Keep the first three weeks deliberately boring.
Once cleanse, moisturise and protect are automatic, introduce one active — one only — and give it eight weeks. Niacinamide and a low-strength retinoid are the two most forgiving places to begin. If something stings, flushes or causes flaking that lasts more than a few days, stop it rather than pushing through.
Skincare needs vary, and persistent or painful concerns deserve a clinician, not a stronger percentage. Treat these guides as education, not a prescription.
